M4 is the star cluster located along the right edge of the image just above half way up (about 7000 light years from earth).  Sh 2-9 is the reddish glow above and to the left of M4 (about 600 light years from earth). Both M4 and Sh 2-9 are located in our Milky Way galaxy.
