The Crab nebula is a supernova remnant (the structure resulting from the explosion of a star). The star exploded about 1000 years ago making this the youngest object in this astrophotography collection.
This nebula has a rapidly expanding shockwave that accounts for the oblong shape.
The tendrils are rapidly moving jets of gas resulting from the explosion.
