The Eagle Nebula is located in our Milky Way galaxy at a distance of 7000 light years.  The red color results from glowing hydrogen gas excited by nearby stars.
All of the stars in this image are located within our Milky Way galaxy.
The cloud-like structure in the center of this nebula is a region known as the Pillars of Creation where stars are being formed.
