The Flaming Star Nebula is located in our Milky Way galaxy at a distance of 1500 light years from the earth.  The bluish portion, that appears like smoke coming from the bright star, is composed mostly of hydrogen, but, does contain some smoke-like dark filaments of carbon-rich dust.
