The Iris Nebula is located in our Milky Way galaxy at a distance of 1300 light years from earth.  The blue color comes from the light reflected off of the gasses making up the nebula.  The reflected light comes from a nearby bright star.  The dark regions in the image are caused by large dust clouds.
