This image contains both the North America and Pelican Nebulae.  
The North America Nebula gets it's name from it's remarkable resemblence to the North American continent including the Gulf of Mexico. 
The Pelican Nebula is located on the right of the image, and, bears a resemblence to a Pelican with it's long bill (looks more like a Pteradactyl to my wife).
Both of these nebula are in our Milky Way galaxy with the North America nebula being a distance of 1600 light years from earth, and, the Pelican nebula being another 200 light years away.
Both nebula are emission nebula with hydrogen giving the redish color.
