The Rosette Nebula is located in our Milky Way galaxy at a distance of 5200 llight years from earth.  The bright stars in the center of the image were formed from the nebula's material.  The bright stars, in turn, excite the hydrogen gas in the nebula yielding the reddish glow.
The reason for the name is self evident.
